Growing up in a family of Mennonite heritage, Kristina spoke German at home, but also learned to be fluent in both English and French, a primary language in her native Canada. She began leading worship in her fathers Mennonite church in Winnipeg at the age of 17, and continued at a Baptist church in Toronto while in college. After graduation, she moved to the U.S. and continued serving in multiple settings in the Phoenix area, leading corporate worship for church services, childrens ministries, singles and women's retreats, and conferences.
Kristinas multi-cultural upbringing, combined with extensive musical training, bring a fresh and unique worship experience to life. In addition to her experience leading worship, she was classically trained in piano performance and opera at the prestigious Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. Likened by some to Enya, Sarah Brightman, Michelle Tumes, or a young Twila Paris, Kristina's artistry transcends categorization.
Her unique heritage has helped Kristinas music find a multi-cultural audience and nearly universal appeal. While primarily recorded in English, her debut CD Bare My Soul features a popular German hymn and a beautiful Spanish translation of Chris Tomlins classic We Fall Down.
Kristinas songs have a decidedly vertical orientation. "If you look at Bare My Soul, all but one song assumes an audience of one, says Kristina. I love this about my album, because I'm not just singing about Him, I'm singing to Him."
Her second album, Hymns: The Old Made New, appeals to people of all backgrounds, all ages and all stages in life. Singing old, familiar texts to new music causes us to slow down and think about what we are actually singing and the meaning can take on fresh life, says Kristina. When I began to understand the hymns and the stories behind them they became a more vital spiritual force in my life.
Her new found passion for hymns has inspired Kristina to research and publish several articles on some of the women who composed them for Christian Women Today and SongDiscovery.com. She has also started to weave their stories into her performances with powerful results
Her commitment to singing both the old and the new offers a wonderful element of worship, and audiences are responding with enthusiasm. Kristinas repertoire ranges from hymns such as the new arrangement of Holy, Holy, Holy and the gentle setting of Rock of Ages, to inspirational pop classics such as her hit single You Alone and her Spanish-language rendition of We Fall Down.
Billy Smiley sums up Kristinas appeal best. When someone hears her they will say, ‘Thats Kristina singing. The one that makes you stop and listen a little closer, the one with the fragile yet beautiful smile in her voice. A voice that draws you into her world and out of yours.’
Kristina may never have intended to step into the spotlight cast by the music industry, but Gods calling can often lead us to surprising places. My desire is not to call attention to myself or bring glory to myself, but to call attention to God and to cause people to think about Him, says Kristina. That's all…nothing more, nothing less.
Whether performing for thousands, caring for her young sons Joey (5), Willy (3) and Benji (1) or leading worship with her husband Joe, a worship pastor in their hometown of Phoenix, Arizona, Kristina has found contentment, and ultimate peace on the road to which God has called her. Her desire to reach the world with reflective and intimate songs expressing her faith is resonating with people around the world through the freedom of worship found within her music.
In a musical landscape filled with manufactured pop, image-driven marketing and lyrical fluff, Kristina is simply a promising artist worth discovering.
